Ionian Yacht Charter: Discover the hidden gems

ionian yacht charter

The Ionian Sea has been well known to sailing enthusiasts for decades. Countless sailing yachts and catamarans drop their anchors in the bays of Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia during the summer season. An Ionian yacht charter is popular even among newbies in sailing. Does that mean that you will not be able to enjoy some solitude and peace of mind? No worries! There are still plenty of places that will warrant serenity and perfect relaxation.

Meganisi

Meganisi is a picturesque, lush green island with three villages (Spartochori, Vathi, Katomeri) and beautiful beaches. It is located across Nydri, Lefkada. The traditional architecture, the friendly locals, the quiet life, the excellent food in the fish taverns, the magnificent scenery with green landscapes and crystal waters; all create an ideal place for the most relaxing summer holidays. Porto Spilia is one of the main ports in Meganisi, crowded with private yachts and smaller boats, a charming must-see location on the island. Visit the islets of Kastos, Kalamos and Prigkiponisa, explore the cave of Papanikolis and swim around Skorpios island (once owned by the famous Aristotle Onasis).

Ithaki

Ithaki or Ithaca, the island of Odysseus (Ulysses), symbolizes the return to the sweet homeland and the end of a journey. No surprise that for most sailors dropping anchor in Ithaca has a special meaning. Despite its proximity to Kefalonia (2km northeast), it is much more peaceful, quiet and undiscovered. When it comes to swimming, there are many options to choose from; from sandy to pebbly beaches, from rocky to sheltered by tamarisks ones, from deserted to ones with beach bars, music and large crowds.

Vathi is the capital of the island and home to the Maritime and Folkloric Museum as well as the Archaeological Museum of Ithaca. The picturesque harbour is located in a bay with the tiny little island of Lazarétto, a former sanatorium and prison. A visit to the Cave of the Nymph is worthwhile not only to admire the beautiful scenery but also to discover the spot where Odysseus had hidden the gifts he had brought from the land of the Phaeacians.

Ithaca together with the Echinades isles, form a marvelous area for an Ionian yacht charter. The Echinades islands were named after the sea urchin (Echinoidea) describing their sharp and prickly coastlines. Atokos Island is uninhabited but provides two beautiful anchorages.

Sivota Thesprotias

Sivota is an old fishing village where many yachts choose to moor not only for its unparalleled beauty but also because it is very close to several popular Ionian islands such as Corfu and Lefkada. Sivota is surrounded by hills covered with pine, cypress and olive trees. The coast alternates between rocky coves and beautiful bays with long sandy and pebbly beaches. Next to the harbour, one will find numerous cafes and restaurants; the perfect spot to relax and enjoy good food. Off the coast of Sivota is the islet of Mourtemeno with the beautiful Bella Vraka beach, accessible on foot via a walk through shallow water.
